Dr. J.W. Carmichael, the founder and former director of Xavier University of Louisiana’s pre-medical programs, was a pivotal force in transforming the university into a national leader in producing Black medical professionals.

Dominican Sister of Peace Sister Ruth Angelette, who served for 42 years as principal of St. Anthony of Padua School on Canal Street, died Sept. 9 at the Metairie home of her niece, Geral Anne Farmer.

Redemptorist Father Gerard “Gerry” LaPorte, who served in ministry for over five decades, died May 17 at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 85.

Congregation of St. Joseph Sister Anne died April 8 at Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, Kansas. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated April 13.

School Sister of Notre Dame Damian Tucker spent 30 years in the parochial schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans as a teacher and principal who loved and appreciated her students.

Christian Brother Michael Joseph Livaudais, a graduate of Archbishop Rummel High School who served for 47 years in religious life, died Sept. 7 at the age of 74.

Deacon Clifford Sidney Wright, a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of New Orleans since 1987 who served for many years at St. Benilde Parish in Metairie, died Aug. 31 at the age of 80.

Deacon Frans J. Labranche, 89, died Sept. 8.

Deacon Shelly's funeral will be held Friday, July 21 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 411 N. Rampart St., New Orleans, with visitation beginning at 8 a.m.,rosary at 9 a.m. with NOFD Final Alarm tribute, and Mass at 10 a.m.

Father Richard Miles, the former pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Church in Kenner, who died June 15 at the age of 80 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after having served for 39 years as a priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Deacon Raymond Heap has died at age 90.

Religious of the Sacred Heart Jan Dunn, who taught in Sacred Heart schools in Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New York and Texas, died on March 27 in Houston.

Sister Jennie Jones' longest tenure was as principal of St. Mary's Academy from which she retired in 2022. Visitation will be March 1 at the Sisters of the Holy Family Motherhouse Chapel from 8-10 a.m.

Father G. Amaldoss dreamed big dreams for his "Little Church in the Woods" – St. Joachim in Marrero. He died unexpectedly in India. A Memorial Mass will be Feb. 8.
