Senior Rachelle Sancho of Avondale, senior Kaylin Bair of Marrero, senior Amber Verdin of Westwego, freshman Kidron Romoser of New Orleans and freshman Sanaa Frazier of New Orleans assisted with set up for a Hawaiian-themed barbecue for the residents. The students also served the residents while getting to know them.

All Saints Parish, 1441 Teche St. in Algiers, will celebrate its centennial with Masses and other celebrations Nov. 1-3. All Saints was established by the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 1919 and staffed by the Josephite Fathers. The church was created as a non-segregated place of worship for African Americans on the West Bank of New Orleans.
My paternal grandfather, who died at the age of 99, wrote me 26 handwritten letters between 1986 and 1996, some of them exceeding 30 pages. Each was filled with wisdom on the importance of faith and education, with advice on facing hardships in life, as well as sage counsel on things like friendship, money, honesty, hard work, marriage and parenting.
Sometimes when I submit my thoughts on the Scripture readings to the editor, she sends back an email asking me to supply a “reflection starter.” I don’t think she’ll make that request this week because a starter for reflection is about all I have to offer.
