I met Thomas Johnson (not his real name) in Ronnie Moore’s office at Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans (CCANO) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon two weeks ago. Ronnie, a long-time civil rights activist, founded Cornerstone Builders at CCANO seven years ago.
I just watched a private viewing of a film that brought back memories of my formative years as a sportswriter in New Orleans. The 62-minute documentary is titled, “Before the West Coast.” Its secondary title is more fitting to the intent of its theme: “A Sports Civil Rights Film.” It was about five years ago that St. Augustine alumnus Oyd Craddock asked me to be part of a film he was working on about the years Otis Washington coached the Purple Knights’ football team.

This was my 11th trip to Omaha for the College World Series. Some of the stuff you do is routine. You can eat at routinely good steak restaurants that are also incredibly cheap. The Academy of the Sacred Heart recently hosted the seventh annual Shelby Leonhard Memorial Blood Drive. Leonhard was a Sacred Heart student who lost her battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2011 when she was in eighth grade.
