OFFICIAL In order to provide pastoral care for the people of God in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Archbishop Aymond has made the following appointments. (All appointments for pastors are for a six-year term, which may be renewed – see story below):
St. Mary’s Dominican High School held its fifth annual multicultural festival recently that highlighted the vast diversity of song and dance among cultures of the world. Students Andrea Garces and Samantha Siliezar, above, performed a Mexican folklore dance, “El Son de la negra.” Below, student Jhané Garner danced while Courtney Gonsoulin sang “Hallelujah.” The St. Mary’s Dominican Multicultural Club sponsored the pageantry of traditional dress and performances.
Divine Mercy Parish in Kenner held a powerful Lenten retreat weekend at Lumen Christi Center in Houma, La. The teens and adults who participated weren’t sure what to expect, but we were all confident that the Lord was going to work – and he did!
In a week of outstanding team and individual performances in the various district track and field championship meets, there was one confounding question: Why did St. Augustine fail to enter the District 9-5A meet April 23?
When the LHSAA softball playoffs began last week, 11 teams from schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans were among the qualifiers. But, after two rounds of play, just two remained to make the trip to Sulphur for the Fast Pitch 56 state championship tournament May 2-3.
A playoff field of six New Orleans-area Catholic schools that qualified for the LHSAA Class 5A baseball playoffs was set to be pared to just four by the end of bi-district-round play. The reason for the early ousts is that the bracket positions, based on the schools’ power ratings, caused Catholic schools to play each other.
It was early on a Saturday morning in the spring of 1997. Back then, the NFL draft was a TV event, but not a three-day TV extravaganza. A call came from radio partner Ken Trahan. “The Saints have made their decision on a first-round pick,” said Ken.
Too often people are fixated on material things, money, power or status – none of which can give life and joy, Pope Francis said. Christians need to examine their lives with the question the angel asked the women who went to the tomb to anoint the body of the buried Jesus: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” w pope said.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LOUISIANA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE In order to provide pastoral governance for the State of Louisiana, Archbishop Aymond has made the following appointment: Mr. Rob Tasman as Executive Director of the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops (LCCB), effective July 1, 2014.
How excited were you by the canonizations of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII? I was very excited. Though I had the privilege to met John Paul II many times – and, of course, he visited New Orleans in 1987 – I didn’t have the opportunity to meet John XXIII.
The two John Pauls were born, worlds apart, within a month of each other in 1920. Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, now 94 and a seminal figure in the federal judiciary’s role of protecting abortion rights during his 35 years on the bench, was born in Chicago on April 20, 1920.

In the last weeks of school, I assigned my college students to read Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” I didn’t know what to expect. Would my students enjoy it? Would they think it was too postmodern or contemporary?
