Susan Anderson Zeringue has been named in-house legal counsel for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, succeeding Wendy Vitter, who was confirmed recently by the U.S. Senate as a federal judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Zeringue, who served most recently as an attorney with Couhig Partners LLC, has volunteered her services in many capacities over the years to several Catholic entities, including the Women’s Giving Circle, Catholic Women in Action, the Catholic Community Foundation, Boys Hope Girls Hope, the executive board of the St. Jude Community Center and the St. Francis Xavier Parish capital campaign.
Her appointment began June 1.
Vitter began working for the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 2012, first helping prepare the nostalgic exhibit of St. John Paul II at the New Orleans Museum of Art (in March 2013) and then as general counsel.
Vitter was nominated for the federal bench in January 2018 by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate in May. She will fill the vacancy left by U.S. District Court Judge Helen Ginger Berrigan.
Archbishop Gregory Aymond praised Vitter for her “extraordinary” ministry to the archdiocese for the last seven years.
“We are very pleased that she has been chosen to serve as a federal judge,” Archbishop Aymond said. “We have no doubt that her gifts will be used to foster justice in our country. She served us at a very important time. I will always remember her generosity, her insights and the way in which she carried out her ministry.”
