The Xavier University women’s tennis team, pictured above, became the university’s first athletic team in any sport to reach the NAIA national semifinal tournament by defeating Embry-Riddle (Fla.), 5-3, in mid-May. The Gold Nuggets achieved the NAIA’s No. 1 ranking after defeating No. 2 William Carey in April. During its run, Coach lan Green’s squad won 11 consecutive matches and defeated 12 ranked NAIA opponents. But William Carey gained revenge for a regular-season loss by defeating the Gold Nuggets, 5-0, in the semifinals of the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship on May 17. Xavier ended the season with a 19-8 record.
