The 75th anniversary of the 1938 8th National Eucharistic Congress held in the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be featured in two “Steppin’ Out” shows on WYES Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The 8th National Eucharistic Congress brought together Catholics from across the country to honor the Eucharist, and the culminating event was a procession to City Park Stadium led by Archbishop Joseph Rummel.
WYES’ locally produced arts and entertainment program, STEPPIN’ OUT, will air two features about the event. The “Steppin’ Out” feature on Sept. 27 will look at the historical background of the Congress and the year-long preparation and decorating.
The Oct. 4 segment will feature an in-depth look at the eucharistic monstrance, which was specially created for the gathering by using precious jewels and gold donated by Catholics from the archdiocese. The segment also will look at some of the most-attended festivities of the Congress, including a Mass at City Park Stadium.
Interviewed for the program were Archbishop Gregory Aymond; retired Saints field announcer Jerry Romig, who participated in the event as a 10-year-old altar boy; and archdiocesan archivist Emilie G. Leumas.
Following the initial airing, “Steppin’ Out” can be seen on demand at wyes.org for two weeks.
