In 2002, Ashley Ruckert was chosen by the Clarion Herald as its Outstanding Volleyball Player after the senior led the Academy of the Sacred Heart to a fourth consecutive state championship.
She now takes charge of the Division III school’s program, taking over for her mentor, Mike Barnes.
After a one-year apprenticeship under Barnes, who will concentrate on his duties as the school’s athletic director, Ruckert has proven her ability to lead from the bench as well as she once did from her position as an inside hitter and middle blocker.
Barnes, who led the Cardinals to six state titles and four runners-up trophies, said the program is in good hands.
“Ashley knows what it means to wear the Sacred Heart uniform and the history and tradition behind the program. She has developed into an excellent teacher of skills, and the girls are very comfortable with her,” Barnes said.
