SERVE – Students Engaging in Reflective Volunteer Experiences – will offer a variety of week-long service opportunities this summer in which high school students can give 15, 20 or 40 hours of their time and talent.
The summer program, now in its sixth year, is co-sponsored by Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans and the archdiocesan Office of Religious Education.
All camps are open to incoming high school freshmen through seniors, unless noted otherwise. SERVE options for summer 2014 are:
➤ June 16-20
Northshore: Faith Bible Camp, Covington; involves a 40-hour commitment.
Southshore: 20-hour service opportunities are available at three New Orleans Head Start locations: Louise; Incarnate Word; and St. John the Baptist.
➤ June 23-27
Northshore: Faith Bible Camp, Covington, 40 hours.
Southshore: Ozanam Inn, New Orleans, 40 hours; Good Shepherd Summer Program, New Orleans, 40 hours. The Good Shepherd service program is open to incoming high school juniors and seniors only.
➤ July 7-11
Southshore: Second Harvest Food Bank, located in the Elmwood area, will offer a choice of two time slots that will give volunteers an opportunity to complete 15 hours of service: 9 a.m. to noon; and 1-4 p.m. The food bank service opportunity is open to incoming high school freshmen and sophomores only.
➤ July 14-18
Southshore: Ozanam Inn, New Orleans, 40 hours; Good Shepherd Summer Program, New Orleans, 40 hours. The Good Shepherd service opportunity is open to incoming high school juniors and seniors only.
SERVE conducts an orientation on the first day of each service week and daily group prayer. Participants provide their own brown-bag lunch and drinks.
