Since 2008, the St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor Walk/Run has attracted walkers across the country to support their local special works projects. Last year, more than $1.8 million was raised at 220 sites nationwide.
This year’s local race, organized by St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocesan Council of New Orleans, will be Sept. 28 at two sites. It will start at 8 a.m., at City Park’s Big Lake (on-site registration at 7:30 a.m.); and 9 a.m. along Mandeville’s lakefront at Jefferson Avenue, across from the Yacht Club (8 a.m. on-site registration). After each event, there will be food, refreshments and music.
“We’re optimistic that this year’s event will be our biggest and most successful ever,” said Michael Champagne, event coordinator. “Hopefully, we’ll have a lot of participants willing donate a few hours and dollars to help support this fund-raiser.”
There is a $5 registration fee for the south shore event.
Proceeds benefit Society of St. Vincent de Paul conferences in the Archdiocese of New Orleans to help those in need with financial assistance for an electric bill, food or clothing, regardless of race or religion.
Access forms at www.svdp nola.org, and mail to: P.O. Box 792880, New Orleans, LA 70179-2880.
Since 1852, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocesan Council of New Orleans has led men and women in spiritual growth by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of the organization’s founder, Frederic Ozanam, renowned servant of the poor, and its patron St. Vincent de Paul, who was known as the “Apostle of Charity” and the “Father of the Poor.”
