As part of their recent science unit on the five senses, Ursuline Academy first graders received a visit from Dimitrios Kouniaris, a graduate of the Lighthouse for the Blind and a student at the Louisiana Center for the Blind in Ruston, La. Kouniaris discussed the challenges faced by blind and visually impaired individuals as well as ways they overcome these obstacles. The youngsters also learned about the history of Braille and different methods of creating the raised-point writing system. After a question-and-answer session, Kouniaris typed each of the students’ names on a Braille typewriter. (Photos courtesy Ursuline Academy)
