Three major awards were bestowed on Lasallian volunteers at the annual Christian Brothers’ Huether Lasallian Conference. The award winners are in the front row: Christian Brother Nick Gonzalez, principal of Cathedral High in El Paso, Texas (community award); Christian Brother Tom Ward of the Christian Brothers School Community of New Orleans (faith award) and Daniel and Sarah Maher of De La Salle North Catholic High in Portland (service award). Daniel Maher is a 2001 graduate of The St. Paul’s School in Covington.
More than 400 Christian Brothers and their lay partners – teachers, campus ministers and administrators representing Lasallian education from elementary school through college – gathered in New Orleans recently for the 40th annual Huether Lasallian Conference on “Meaningful Instruction: Living Lasallian Pedagogy.”
Among the conference presenters was a trio from De La Salle High School, who spoke on “Learning for Justice: One Book for Justice Initiative.”
Campus minister Tony Behan shared the school’s experience of having all students read one book over the summer and then prepare a PowerPoint presentation of one chapter.
Behan, English department member Jan Ellis and student Christiana Ellard discussed the choice of Jesuit Father Greg Boyle’s “Tattoos on the Heart” for the schoolwide book reading last summer.
Daniel Maher, a 2001 graduate of The St. Paul’s School, was a Lasallian volunteer who has gone on to teach in several Christian Brothers schools. He and his wife Sarah were given the service award for pursuing service of the poor through education with great “empathy, creativity, and determination.”
Christian Brother Robert Bimonte, the new president of the National Catholic Educational Association, spoke on relationship as the heart of Lasallian education.
