Mitchell Johnson became the sixth coach to lead St. Augustine to a Catholic League boys’ basketball championship when he guided the Purple Knights to the 2013-14 District 9-5A title.
In his second year as the Knights’ head coach, Johnson joined his predecessors – George “Nick” Connor, Cirilo Manego, Watson Jones, Bernard Griffith and Clifford Barthe – as head coach of a championship team.
A 1995 St. Augustine graduate, Johnson was a starting guard on the Purple Knights’ 1994-95 team coached by Griffith that captured a Class 5A state title and was named national champion by USA Today following a 37-1 season. Johnson was a three-year letterman as a guard.
In just his second season, Johnson has led the Knights to a 27-8 record, a 9-1 district mark and into the LHSAA tournament semifinals, earning him Coach of the Year recognition on the Clarion Herald’s Elite Boys’ Basketball team.
Player of the Year honors go to Holy Cross senior guard Greg White-Pittman, who averaged nearly 30 points per game as the leading scorer in District 9-5A. He holds the highest district scoring average (29.8) ever recorded in one of the most competitive 5A districts in the state and was the heart of the Tigers’ offense.
Also a tenacious defender, White-Pittman was the best all-around player in the league.
