The June 20 issue of the Clarion Herald had special meaning for our Southern communities. It addresses Christians’ role in perpetuating and perhaps eventually eliminating abuse and oppression of African Americans.
I appreciate Peter Finney, Jr.’s straightforward coverage of Corpus Christi, in which the archbishop mentioned racism and left us with words of hope depending on our involvement. Mr. Finney’s coverage of the large march and prayer service led by former Archbishop Hughes, Auxiliary Bishop Fernand Cheri and Archbishop Aymond made a strong impression. Bishop Cheri drives home the point that change will require diverse racial, cultural and religious participation. He would not be silent.
Dr. Stephen McKenna explains why Black Lives Matter was and is appropriate in correcting our nation’s errors, using the pride in one’s flag analogy. I’ve yelled “Black Lives Matter Too” at protests at the suggestion of a Black senior neighbor. Dr. McKenna describes the many positive ways one can interpret taking the knee instead of seeing it as disrespectful. I “take the knee” at 6 p.m. every evening outside in meditation and prayer for insight and enlightenment for all, especially for those in denial.
Jimmi Hendrix gives us a timely quote: “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
