The Office of Religious Education of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is offering classes for catechists to renew their certification or those seeking to become catechists.
Catechists are required to take a five-hour course or workshop each year for certification renewal.
Three different specialty classes are available this summer: Economic Justice June 17-18 (morning) at the Northshore Pastoral Center, 19266 Slemmer Road in Covington, and June 19-20 (morning) at St. Louis King of France; Use of Film in Catechetics June 17-18 (evening) at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 455 Ames Blvd., Marrero, June 19-20 (evening) at the Northshore Pastoral Center and July 10-11 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Matthew the Apostle.
The popular continuing education course, Teaching with Maryknoll 2, will be offered July 8-9 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Jesuit High School, 4133 Banks St., New Orleans.
“The specialty courses are new this summer,” said Paula Taylor, associate director of the Office of Religious Education. “They are for those who have introductory certification and only need renewal.”
The 10-hour courses starting week of June 17 include: Catholic Understanding of Scripture (morning) at St. Rosalie; Sacraments and Worship (morning) and Church History (evening) at St. Joan of Arc in LaPlace; Ecclesiology and Mission (morning), Annunciation Church, Dobyns Center, in Bogalusa; Christology (morning session) and Church History (evening session) at Jesuit High School; Intro Course I (June 17-18) and II (June 19-20) in the evening at St. Louis King of France; and Catholic Understanding of Scripture at St. Rosalie in Harvey.
Beginning the week of June 24: Sacraments and Worship (morning and evening sessions), St. Louis King of France; Morality and Catholic Social Teaching (evening), St. Joan of Arc, LaPlace; Church History (morning), St. Joseph the Worker, 455 Ames Blvd., Marrero; and The Creed (morning and evening), Jesuit High School; Christology (evening), Northshore Pastoral Center; Sacraments and Worship (morning), Annunciation Dobyns Center.
