During an evening of celebration in which the Allstate Sugar Bowl welcomed former Newman head football coach Tony Reginelli, New Orleans Saints placekicker Morten Andersen and ex-Tulane tight end Rodney Holman into its Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame, seven athletes who prepped at local Catholic high schools were recognized for monthly outstanding honors for 2012-13.
They included:
July 2012 – Former Mount Carmel softball standout Christy Orgeron, who helped the U.S. national team win the gold medal at the World Cup of softball.
August 2012 – Pitcher Emerson Gibbs, who pitched a three-hit shutout to give Jesuit the American Legion World Series championship. For the month, he allowed just 24 hits in 47 innings and posted a 5-0 record and 1.15 earned-run average. He was named National Legion Player of the Year.
November 2012 – Quarterback Damian Williams, who led Archbishop Rummel to five playoff wins and its first Class 5A state championship.
February 2013 – St. Paul’s Connor Campo, who capped his 194-victory wrestling career by winning his second straight 132-pound championship.
March 2013 – Former Jesuit star Mason Katz, who batted .455 (35-of-77) with 11 home runs, 38 RBI and 19 runs scored for LSU in 20 games during the month, earning him National Player of the Week twice.
April 2013 – Charles Noble, who led Archbishop Rummel to a second consecutive Division I bowling championship by rolling a 663 series.
May 2013 – Jesuit’s Hobie Hotard ended a brilliant tennis career by leading Jesuit to a sixth straight state championship. Hotard marked his fourth consecutive singles title by winning the championship match, 6-1, 6-0.
Archbishop Rummel’s Jay Roth, who directed his team to a 14-0 record and its first state football championship, was named the Outstanding Prep Coach, State of Louisiana.
Jesuit product Patrick Mullins was named New Orleans’ outstanding Male Amateur athlete after leading the University of Maryland’s soccer team to a 20-1-3 record.
