St. Paul’s senior Trey Hughes, an honor student and son of Charles M. Hughes,Jr. of Covington and Connie N. Phillips of Mandeville, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship from The Kelly Gibson Foundation on behalf of the Mackel Foundation as a junior golfer who participates in the Kelly Gibson Junior Golf Tour. The scholarhip was based on community service, academic achievements and financial need; regardless of the players’ golfing ability. All members of the KGJGT who are at least juniors in high school are eligible to receive scholarships. Trey has been a member of St. Paul’s Varsity Golf Team since his freshman year, and he was team captain junior year. He was recognized for his creative writing ability by Ducks Unlimited with the Scholastic Art and Writing Award for 2016. Trey’s original short story is titled, “The Hunt, First In and First Out,” published recently in “Hunting Stories” by Ducks Unlimited.
