St. Augustine High School junior David Bartholomew, won three medals in February for his project on parallel vs. series circuits at the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair held at the University of New Orleans.
“My project really caught their attention because I built a two-story house that was 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide with built-in lights,” Bartholomew said.
Bartholomew, a first-time fair participant, came in second place overall in the mechanical and electrical engineering category of the senior division. Thirteen schools participated in the senior division. He won $225 in cash prizes along with the three medals.
Bartholomew was also awarded a first-place medal by M.S. Benbow and Associates for outstanding senior division investigative projects in the field of electrical engineering and another first-place medal from the New Orleans Federal Executive Board for the outstanding exhibit of energy conservation and/or energy resource development.
He said he worked on the project during his two-week Christmas break and was inspired to do the award-winning project because he has always enjoyed building things and likes to have a challenge.
Bartholomew, a kicker for the school’s football team, said he hopes to study aeronautical engineering at either the United States Naval Academy, United States Air Force Academy or Tuskegee University.
