School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Joan of Arc Rockenbaugh, who taught at Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Baton Rouge, died Jan. 14 at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa, Miss.
A native of Patterson, La., Sister Joan of Arc was 90 years old and had served for 72 years in religious life.
She moved with her parents to New Orleans in 1934, and she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in St. Louis in 1939. She pronounced vows in 1943.
In the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Sister Joan of Arc taught at Immaculate Conception School in Marrero and Sacred Heart School in New Orleans. She taught in Catholic schools in Baton Rouge for 23 years.
Her final 16 years as a teacher were in Irving, Texas, at Notre Dame Vocational School.
Sister Joan of Arc became a volunteer resident at Wynhoven Apartments in Marrero. She moved to St. Mary of the Pines in 2009.
She is survived by her brother Gerard of Slidell, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 18 at St. Teresa Church in Chatawa. She was buried in the Chatawa Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to St. Mary of the Pines, 3167 Old Hwy. 51 South, Chatawa, Miss., 39632.
