A Memorial Mass for Daughter of Charity Sister Estelle Laiche will be celebrated Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Wisdom, 5600 General De Gaulle Drive, New Orleans. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Estelle was celebrated Nov. 19 at the Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville, Ind. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Sister Estelle died Nov. 16. She was 91 and celebrated 72 years of religious life.
Sister Estelle, a native of St. James, graduated in 1940 from St. Joseph High School in New Orleans and entered the Daughters of Charity in 1941. In 1951, she earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing education at DePaul University in Chicago.
She transferred to the National Hansen’s Disease Center in Carville, La., in 1956 as a staff nurse, where she served until 1962. She also served as pediatrics supervisor and director of nursing service at Charity Hospital in Lafayette from 1962-69 and nursing supervisor at Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans from 1969-71.
She was the clinic director/dialysis supervisor at Hotel Dieu from 1972-76. She served at Hotel Dieu-Chalmette/Family Medical Center in New Orleans from 1985-88. Sister Estelle became a volunteer at Food for Families/Food for Seniors in New Orleans from 1995-2004. She resided at Our Lady of Wisdom before moving to Seton Residence in Evansville in 2010.
Sister Estelle is survived by four siblings, Patricia Radecker, Theresa Laiche and Paul Laiche, all of Metairie; and Catherine Baiamonte of Leesburg, Fla.
