Daughter of Charity Sister Catherine (Catherine Dolores) Chernick, a member of the Province of St. Louis, died April 25 at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans. Sister Catherine was 97 years old and had spent 79 years in religious life.
A native of Chicago, Sister Catherine joined the Community of Daughters of Charity in 1932 in Keokuk, Iowa.
She ministered for 66 years in the mental health care ministry as a mental health educator and nurse, serving in St. Louis, Carville, La., and, for the majority of her years, in New Orleans at Hotel Dieu, DePaul Hospital and Charity Hospital.
For the last six years, Sister Catherine was a resident at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center, where she served in the ministry of prayer. Prior to that, Sister Catherine resided at Malta Square. While there, she was active serving in the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated April 28 at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center. Burial was at St. Vincent Cemetery in New Orleans.
