The Southern Dominican Province will honor Michie Bissell, a retired dental hygienist, volunteer and civic activist, at its Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. gala at Copeland Tower Suites, 2701 Severn Ave., in Metairie.
A native of Mississippi and a Loyola University New Orleans graduate, Bissell is a parishioner and pastoral council member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in New Orleans. Her volunteerism includes medical missions to Honduras, Nicaragua and India, where she helped open clinics and assist mission dentists. In Chenal, India, Bissell participated in mission work at the leper clinic and colonies.
Bissell and her husband Tom have four children and seven grandchildren. She is on the French Quarter Citizens Association board, president of the Lower Quarter Crime Watch and chair of the City of New Orleans’ Human Relations Commission. She is president of the board of St. Jude Community Center, is vice commander of the Southern Commandry of the Military and Hospitallier Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, on Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Pastoral Council and on Loyola’s board of trustees.
Bissell served 22 years on the Southern Dominican Province’s advisory board.
