Three St. Tammany Parish Catholic schools reign today as LHSAA soccer champions.
St. Paul’s and its sister school, St. Scholastica, notched their victories on March 1, while Pope John Paul II claimed its first Division III title on Feb. 28 at Tad Gormley Stadium.
St. Paul’s (25-1-1) rolled over upstart Grace King, 3-0, behind two goals by Division I boys’ Most Valuable Player Eric Guin. The junior scored the Wolves’ first and third goals.
In their fourth consecutive trip to the finals, the Wolves claimed their fifth team title and first since 2011.
St. Scholastica is no stranger to championship matches either. And in its sixth consecutive trip to the finals, the No. 1-seeded Doves slipped past No. 2 Lafayette, 1-0.
The deciding goal came off the foot of senior forward Kate Gutterman in the 97th minute of an exciting match that was decided in overtime.
Maegan Due, a senior center, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Pope John Paul II, the No. 1 seed in the LHSAA’s lowest soccer division, used two goals by senior forward Jessica Mahoney to stave off a Newman rally and give the Lady Jaguars a 2-1 victory.
As her father and the team’s head coach, J.B., watched, Mahoney powered home the deciding goal in the 72nd minute to clinch the victory and the school’s first title.
The three schools join Archbishop Rummel (football) and Brother Martin (wrestling) as state champions from schools representing the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
