Its gymnasium is small and antiquated, and there is no facility near campus to run or jump, but that didn’t stop St. Katharine Drexel Prep from winning division championships in basketball and girls’ track and field during the 2017-18 school year.
The school’s athletic department will receive the coveted Eddie Robinson Award at the All-State Sugar Bowl’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Aug. 4. Five years ago, the school, then known as Xavier Prep,was saved from extinction by former students whose funding efforts reopened the school under its current name.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl selected Danny Tullis as its Prep Coach of the Year after he led Pope John Paul II to a fourth straight volleyball state championship. His Jaguars posted the best won-loss record in the sport of 37-5.
Ursuline Academy’s Kourtney Weber starred in the Lions’ Division II championship game in her senior year and was honored as the February 2018 Athlete of the Month.
Julien Gums quarterbacked De La Salle to its first appearance in the state football championship finals since 1961. His feats led the Cavaliers to a district title and earned him the honor as the Allstate Sugar Bowl’s Athlete of September 2017.
Erin Burkart, a 180 bowler, rolled a four-game 830 series as Academy of Our Lady won its first state championship. Burkart, the state MVP, is the April 2018 Athlete of the Month.
