A playoff field of six New Orleans-area Catholic schools that qualified for the LHSAA Class 5A baseball playoffs was set to be pared to just four by the end of bi-district-round play.
The reason for the early ousts is that the bracket positions, based on the schools’ power ratings, caused Catholic schools to play each other.
Two were No. 12 seed Archbishop Shaw (21-11), which hosted No. 21 Holy Cross on April 28. The winner was to continue on to the regional round, which is a best-of-three competition May 2-3.
The two split their District 9-5A games. Shaw won the first time, 14-4, while Holy Cross won the rematch, 14-5.
No. 2 seed Brother Martin (27-4) hosted No. 31 St. Paul’s (13-11), also on Monday.
Two other Catholic League teams made the post-season field.
No. 3 Jesuit (26-4) was scheduled to host No. 30 Central (17-16) at Ryan Field on April 29, while No. 19 Archbishop Rummel (20-14) visited No. 14 Hahnville (23-10) earlier in the week.
