Sister of St. Joseph Louise Ibert (formerly Sister Mary Edward), who taught for 56 years at schools in Louisiana, Mississippi and Ohio, died Aug. 2 at Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, Kan. She was 86 and had served as a Sister of St. Joseph for 67 years.
A native of New Orleans, she was the daughter of Anthony William and Viola Perroux Ibert. Sister Louise was predeceased by two brothers, John J. and Edward R. Ibert. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Sister Louise entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in New Orleans in 1946 and professed perpetual vows in 1952. She received a bachelor of science degree in education and social studies from Loyola University New Orleans and an M.A. in education and counseling from Xavier University of Louisiana. She earned certification as a coordinator of religious education at the Institute of Catechetics and Spirituality in New Orleans.
In the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Sister Louise taught at St. Rose de Lima, Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Frances Cabrini, the Sisters of St. Joseph School, Redeemer High School and Delille Middle School.
Besides her teaching assignments, she was principal of Our Lady of the Gulf in Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Sacred Heart School in Morgan City, La.
She also served as campus minister at Archbishop Hannan High School in Meraux.
In 2004, Sister Louise retired at St. Joseph Convent in New Orleans, and she resided in Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina. She moved in 2013 to Mount St. Mary’s Convent in Wichita. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated there Aug. 6.
