Sister of the Holy Family Bertrand Neveu, who served for 72 years in religious life, died May 15 in New Orleans. She was 91.
Sister Bertrand, the daughter of Fortunet Neveu and Elva Journet, was an educator and worked with the homeless and poor of the area. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family in 1942, made first vows in 1945 and perpetual vows on Aug. 15, 1950.
She was a teacher, administrator, mistress of boarders, and alumni moderator for the Sisters of the Holy Family. She served in Louisiana schools at St. Francis Xavier in Baton Rouge, Immaculate Heart of Mary and Holy Rosary Institute in Lafayette, St. Francis of Assisi in Breaux Bridge, Christ the King in Bellevue, Our Lady Help of Christians in Bastrop, All Saints and House of the Holy Family in New Orleans. She also served in schools in Texas and California.
Sister Bertrand offered service in soup kitchens in New Orleans and Shreveport, where she also worked with newly released prisoners.
Sister Bertrand is survived by her sister Gloria N. Traylor and brother Fortunet Neveu Jr. Her funeral Mass was celebrated May 22 in the Chapel of the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Holy Family. She was buried at St. Louis Cemetery No. 2.
