Sister of Mount Carmel Ann Carmel Segura, a teacher and artist, died Dec. 27, 2016, at Evangeline Oaks Guest House in Carencro, Louisiana. She was 103 and in the 83rd year of her religious profession.
Sister Ann Carmel was born Levie Annette Segura to Albin Joseph Segura of Segura, Louisiana, and Adelaide Llewellyn Eaton of Owensboro, Kentucky. She entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Sept. 5, 1930, and received the habit on Aug. 5, 1931.
She made her first profession on Aug. 2, 1933, and pronounced perpetual vows on Aug. 3, 1936.
Sister Ann Carmel taught from 1933-86 at Mount Carmel schools in Thibodaux, Lafayette, Abbeville and New Iberia. Since 1986, she served as a private art teacher, painter and in prayer ministry in New Iberia, Abbeville, New Orleans and Lafayette. Sister Ann Carmel was certified to teach high school biology, vocal music, English, social sciences and art.
From 1962-67, she served the congregation as mistress of postulants and mistress of novices. She designed the flower of Carmel, blossoming vine patio and the escutcheon of Mount Carmel at the Carmelite Spirituality Center in Lacombe, Louisiana.
She earned a master’s degree in art in 1969 and another master’s degree in fine arts in 1974 from the University of Notre Dame. Her paintings and sculptures have been showcased in numerous Louisiana galleries. She received numerous awards at juried shows in watercolor, painting, freestanding art and dimensional art as triptychs.
Sister Ann Carmel is survived by her nephew, Charles F. Segura of New Roads, Louisiana, and nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 7 at the Sisters of Mount Carmel Motherhouse in New Orleans. Interment followed in St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery.
