PITTSBURGH (CNS) – Those working in the Catholic press today are in a special moment of time to share the good news of Jesus with the world, Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl of Washington said at the 100th anniversary Mass for the Catholic Press Association June 23 at St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh.
“As we celebrate this centenary and look to the future, we reaffirm in our hearts and in our ministry that we do have ‘the rest of the story’ to bring to our readers, listeners and viewers,” Cardinal Wuerl said in his homily. “We bring a vision of the unfolding of God’s word and the manifesting of his kingdom in a way that truly transforms the world.” Cardinal Wuerl told the Catholic journalists that he felt a bond of solidarity with them.
As a young priest, he wrote articles for L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s newspaper, and then as bishop of his hometown diocese, he wrote weekly columns for the Pittsburgh Catholic, and as the archbishop of Washington, he contributes “The Teaching of Christ” column for the Catholic Standard and for the El Pregonero newspaper.
