“We will not stop. Our work has just begun,” said Allison Millet, Woman’s New Life Clinic (WNLC) CEO, in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that upholds Mississippi’s after-15-weeks abortion ban and basically overturns the court’s 1973 Roe V. Wade decision that made abortion legal.
“At Woman’s New Life Clinic, we knew that the legality of abortion would never stop our work. Unplanned pregnancies will not stop,” Millet said. “Neither will we.”
She said, for the past 21 years, thousands of women have sought WNLC for free “life-affirming” medical and mental care, including getting confirmation of a pregnancy and gestational age, free diapers, baby clothes and portable sleepers. Social workers and professional counselors at the clinic also assist women with adoption plans, health insurance applications, housing assistance and treatment for substance abuse.Millet said the Supreme Court decision should allow Louisiana law (Senate Bill 342 signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards June 21 that essentially bans abortion except when the life of the mother is threatened) to go into effect immediately.
Through WNLC, women in crisis and grief are empowered to see hope with the many services available to them. While the circumstances surrounding an unplanned pregnancy will still be there, “we need to be there for her (the mother),” Millet said.
“We will continue to provide free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and abortion pill reversal to women considering at-home medical abortion or traveling out of state to have an aborion,” she said. “We will continue to link arms with other adoption agencies, churches and life-affirming programs that support mothers.”
WNLC also provides low-cost well-woman care, urgent gynecologic care and STI testing and treatment.
