Second Harvest Food Bank of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is making lemonade out of lemons.
With the cancellation of St. Patrick’s Day parades in both New Orleans and Metairie because of the spread of coronavirus, the food bank at 700 Edwards Ave. in Elmwood is accepting donations of any produce – such as cabbage, potatoes, onions, garlic and other fruits and vegetables – that was intended for the parades.
Fresh produce is something Second Harvest vitally needs year-round.
“We will absolutely ensure that a Louisiana family in need will be helped by these donations,” said Second Harvest spokesman Jay Vise.
Second Harvest will accept these and any other donations from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of any size are welcomed. The warehouse facility has 20,000 square foot of cooler space to keep everything fresh.
School closings could especially impact children who rely on school meals, and if the situation escalates, workers in our service industry could find themselves without a paycheck for some time.
Second Harvest also is accepting donations of cleaning supplies.
