The reigning national champion, Retif Oil, will be hard pressed to defend its American Legion baseball title after dropping into the losers’ bracket at the Southeast Regional playoffs, held at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium between July 13-17.
The Jesuit-based Retif team lost to Gauthier Amedee of Prairieville, 9-8, in the opening round, but rallied to defeat Townsend Homes of LaPlace, 11-1.
First District champion Peake BMW, based at Brother Martin, and Refuel, stocked with Archbishop Shaw players, are also competing.
Peake defeated Refuel, 4-2, and HK Tors of Hammond, 10-0, to advance.
Peake outlasted Retif to win the First District title after three grueling games last week, winning the first and third by the scores of 6-4 and 7-5, respectively. Retif forced a third and deciding game by handing Peake a 5-4 setback.
Refuel qualified by being the Second District runner-up.
