St. Paul’s 4×800-meter relay team and Archbishop Rummel middle distance specialist Cyril Grayson entered the record book at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic on March 24 at Tad Gormley Stadium.
The team of Christian Bergeron, Nicholas Taylor, Zachary Albright and Scott Brewster set the blistering time of 7:57.57 to erase the record 8:00.65 time Archbishop Rummel set in 2002.
But Grayson brought a smile to Rummel coaches and fans when he distanced himself from the field early in the 400-meter dash event to win easily in a record time of 47.56.
The previous mark was set in 2005 by Ronnie Alexander of Bellaire (47.95).
Those were two of seven records set on the final day of the two-day event. The other five were set on the women’s side.
Brother Martin’s Morgan Cormier continued his mastery of the hurdles events. The senior won both the 110-meter event in 14.77 and the 300-meter low hurdles in 39.36.
Cormier’s qualifying run in the high hurdles of 14.63 surpassed his time recorded in the finals.
Cormier also ran a leg on the Crusaders’ winning 4×400-meter relay and was named the meet’s outstanding Male Track Athlete.
Cormier’s performance was one of many that led Brother Martin to a second-place finish in the boys’ field. The Crusaders’ winning time of 3:25.50 in the 4×400-meter relay was just fractions faster than second place Rummel’s time of 3:25.58 as the two anchors hit the finish line simultaneously.
Jesuit’s Neal Fitzpatrick broke away from the field midway through Lap 4 of the 3,200-meter run, then coasted to a 9:44.11 winning time.
Two members of St. Paul’s record-breaking 4×800-meter team also had their individual moments. Brewster won the 1,600-meter run in 4:23.24 and Albright placed second in the 800-meter run.
Archbishop Shaw’s Lionel Ellison picked up two silver medals for second-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and high jump.
Dominican’s Nicole Delesdernier also placed second in the girls’ javelin throw competition.
