After reading Peter Finney’s article in the Clarion Herald (May 18 issue, “Juggling life and an unplanned pregnancy”), the same thought again came to me each time I hear of another abortion.
Why aren’t the Catholic universities and Catholic high schools putting info on their bulletin boards or using their counselors to encourage young women to seek out Volunteers of America’s unwed mother’s program or Catholic Charities’ unwed mother’s program (Adoption Services)? There are wonderful families every day registering to adopt babies through these two programs (I am sure there are other programs out there) who wait years to adopt a baby. The unwed mother’s expenses are all paid once she registers with one of these programs, and she can even meet with the family adopting her baby if she so chooses.
I work with a lady who has adopted two beautiful boys over the years through the Volunteers of America’s program. The boys were both born to young college women who were encouraged by their families to give the babies up for adoption instead of murdering them through abortion. The girls went on to finish college with a clear conscience, knowing they did the right thing and their child will be well cared for.
Giving these girls other alternatives to abortion and the consequences of ending a life is so very important – not only for the unborn child but for the unwed mother, whose life will never be the same.
