New Orleans Right to Life recently sponsored its first pro-life poster and video contest, “If Abortion Isn’t Wrong, Nothing Is,” during Respect Life month in October.
The contest, aimed to instill in students a respect for life from conception to natural death, was open to all students in fifth through 12th grade. Prizes of $50 were awarded to 14 schoolwide winners who advanced to the citywide contest. Citywide first-place winners won an additional $100.
In the poster contest, first-place citywide winners were: Isabella Kirkland, a St. Cletus sixth grader, fifth- through sixth-grade division; Brooke Scardino, St. Ann seventh grader, seventh- and eighth-grade division; and Kelsey Conley, Archbishop Chapelle 11th grader, high school division.
Video contest winners were: Bridget Creely, Emily Highstreet, Courtney Bruno and Nicole Bryer, 12th graders at Mount Carmel Academy; and Rebekah Travis, eighth grade at Mount Carmel Academy.
Placing second citywide in the poster contest were: Savannah Sticker, St. Louis King of France fifth grader, fifth- and sixth-grade division; Peyton Miller, Mount Carmel eighth grader, seventh- and eighth-grade division; and Faith Adams, Academy of Our Lady 11th grader, high school division. Placing second in the high school division of the video contest was Danielle Bourg, an 11th grader at Academy of Our Lady.
“The posters and videos were great,” said Mary Nadeau, projects director of New Orleans Right to Life and special projects director of Louisiana Right to Life. “The students really did a good job of understanding the issues and explaining them. Some shared personal stories. … We’re hoping to expand it next year.”
Nadeau sees the contest as a concrete way to form pro-life consciences in young people. Winning poster and video projects will be displayed through year’s end at the New Orleans Right to Life office, 7121 Catina St., New Orleans, or on the web, www.prolifelouisiana.org/youth/contest/html.
