Archbishop Gregory Aymond has asked pastors throughout the Archdiocese of New Orleans to offer prayers Sept. 10-11 for the workers of Avondale Shipyard who are facing the prospect of losing their jobs.
In a letter to pastors Aug. 1, Archbishop Aymond said he was endorsing the “Pray for Avondale” weekend that will be observed in churches of many faiths throughout the area.
“Since 1938, the Avondale Shipyard has generated good jobs and a high standard of living for thousands of families in the New Orleans area,” the archbishop said. “Now, plans are moving forward to close the shipyard, which would result in the loss of 5,000 jobs while also negatively impacting small businesses which rely on the patronage of workers from Avondale.
“With this in mind, a diverse group of faith leaders are joining together to lift this situation up in prayer so that God’s will may be done. Let us come together and ask God’s blessings on the workers and their families that their hope may be sustained.”
