Coming off an impressive 38-17 victory over District 9-5A rival Jesuit and looking to sweep the district schedule against Brother Martin on Saturday, Archbishop Rummel will be one of three top seeds for local Catholic school teams as the football and volleyball playoffs begin.
Rummel (8-0) faces an unranked but dangerous Martin team whose only resolve is an upset of the Raiders. If Rummel can get past this traditional rival, it will enter the Class 5A playoffs as the top seed.
Mount Carmel (38-3) is the Division I top seed, and Ursuline Academy (32-9) is the No. 1 seed in Division III. The two drew opening-round byes and will host regional round matches on Nov. 5.
Ten schools in the archdiocese of New Orleans will be eligible to compete in the football playoffs, according to the Week 9 power rankings. And win or lose, none should drop out of the 32-team brackets.
The current seedings are in parentheses:
Class 5A – Rummel (1), Jesuit (5) and St. Paul’s (14) will host first-round games.
Class 4A – Holy Cross (6) should drop no lower than No. 8 if it loses to East Jefferson (7). St. Augustine (15) will open the playoffs at home, and Archbishop Shaw (31) will most likely face No. 2 and District 9-4A opponent Karr. Karr would probably also be St. Augustine’s second-round opponent.
Class 3A – St. Charles Catholic (21) and De La Salle (25) will have to play bi-district games on the road.
Class 2A – Pope John Paul II (28) will face a high seed on the road.
Class 1A – Archbishop Hannan (19) will also travel for its bi-district round.
Mount Carmel will face the winner of the Lafayette (11-15) vs. New Iberia (22-16) match at home on Nov. 5.
No. 5 Dominican (32-9), which defeated Mount Carmel in the district championship tiebreaker match (3-1), is the No. 5 seed and will host either Zachary (22-8) or Hahnville (14-22) on Nov. 5.
No. 13 Archbishop Chapelle (22-18) was scheduled to host No. 20 Denham Springs (18-18) on Nov. 1, with the winner at No. 4 St. Joseph Academy on Nov. 5.
No. 4 St. Scholastica (29-11) and No. 5 Cabrini (29-10) drew byes and could meet in the quarterfinals of the Division II tournament.
No. 20 Academy of Our Lady (13-18) is at No. 13 Sam Houston (18-18), with the winner at St. Scholastica.
Ursuline (32-9) awaits either No. 16 Westlake (16-12) or No. 17 Evangel (18-3) in the Division III regional round, while No. 20 Xavier Prep (12-14) treks to Southwest Louisiana to face No. 13 Iowa (17-10).
As the No. 2 seed in Division IV, De La Salle (29-9) will host the winner of the Thomas Jefferson (11-18) vs. St. Charles Catholic (7-15) match on Nov. 5.
No. 11 Academy of the Sacred Heart (12-23) was scheduled to host No. 22 St. Mary’s Academy (11-12) on Nov. 1, with the winner traveling to Iota in the regional round.
Seeded No. 24, Pope John Paul II (9-17) was set to meet No. 9 McGehee (16-20) in New Orleans on Nov. 1.
Archbishop Hannan’s volleyball team drew the No. 11 seed in Division V and will host No. 22 Crescent City (16-9). The winner will visit No. 6 St. Martin’s on Nov. 5.
The state tournament will be played Nov. 8-10 at the Pontchartrain Center, beginning with the quarterfinal round. Check www.lhsaa.org. for match times.
