De La Salle High School President William J. Hebert announced the appointment of long-time faculty member and Academic Assistant Principal Peggy M. St. John as the school’s new principal.
Additionally, he announced that Michael Buras, former lead teacher of social studies, has been appointed academic assistant principal. Buras has taught for six years at De La Salle.
St. John, who is entering her 30th year at the school, holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary math and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of New Orleans. She has served for the last eight years as academic assistant principal. Prior to that, she held the position of dean of academics for 3 ½ years.
During her tenure at DLS, St. John has served as Literary Rally coordinator for eight years and Academic Games adviser for 16 years, during which time her teams took both local and national titles.
This past school year, she was the school coordinator for the five-year interim study by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in which the school received renewed academic certification and received 11 commendations.
“I hope to reaffirm our long-standing outstanding academic program, the traditional spirit of Lasallian schools, and to support our constantly improving athletic programs,” St. John said. “I also would like to improve communication within our DLS family.”
She commended the faculty and staff who have “rallied to show team commitment during the difficult summer and who have been supportive of the school and its mission.”
