Students in Robert Sanders’ pre-engineering class at Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie recently participated in a “Great Vehicle Race” during class time The project had students brainstorming, building, testing and improving a vehicle that would travel as far as possible along a straight line on the ground.
Students worked in teams to complete the class task that would accomplish engineering class objectives.
To accomplish the task at hand, the student teams were given sheets of card stock, toilet paper tubes, masking tape, pipe cleaners, wooden dowels and popsicle sticks. At the end of class, the student teams demonstrated their finished projects. Winning vehicles received loud cheers from classmates.
Currently, about 65 students in ninth through 12th grade participate in this year-long elective at Archbishop Rummel. This pre-engineering program has been around for five years.
