Led by another solid performance in field events and the versatility of sprinter-hurdler Morgan Cormier, host Brother Martin outpointed a competitive field of 14 schools to win the Crusader Relays at Tad Gormley Stadium on March 30.
A 1-2 finish in the pole vault by Patrick Hoppe (12 feet) and Dominick Casadaban (11 feet) and double scoring in the shotput and javelin events provided most of the Crusaders’ 43 field points.
Cormier, the Sugar Bowl meet’s Outstanding Track Performer last week, won the 110-high hurdles in 14.27 and the 300-meter hurdles in 39.64 and anchored two Brother Martin relay teams that scored points.
Another double winner was Jesuit’s distance specialist Neal Fitzpatrick, who was first in the 1,600-meter run in 4:29.92 and in the 3,200-meter event in 10:04.46.
The speed belonged to Edna Karr’s Jeremy Hicks, who won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran legs of the Cougars’ victorious 400- and 800-meter relay teams. Karr’s 76 points gave the Algiers school fourth place in the all-boys’ meet, but Karr managed just 13 points in the field to finish behind second place John Curtis and third place Archbishop Rummel.
Rummel’s Cyril Grayson, the reigning Class 5A 800-meter champion, captured that event in 1:53.73, the first time he has run it this season.
Three of Grayson’s teammates – Brian Hunt (400-meter dash), Andrew Bridge (javelin throw) and Joshua Brumfield (triple jump) – all had winning performances.
Holy Cross’ Ed Eagan’s 21-11 1/2 won the long jump.
