Oblate Father Clarence C. Menard, who taught on the faculty at Notre Dame Seminary from 1989 to 2006, died March 4 in San Antonio, Texas. He was 84 and had served for 64 years in religious life.
A native of Mooers, New York, Father Menard entered the Oblate novitiate in 1952 in New Hampshire. He professed vows on Aug. 2, 1953, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1958, at St. Jean-Baptiste Church in Lowell, Massachusetts.
He earned a licentiate and doctorate in church history in 1967 from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
In addition to his tenure at Notre Dame Seminary, Father Menard served as a professor at Oblate colleges and seminaries in Maine, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. He also was part of the formation team at the national Oblate Novitiate in Illinois.
In 2006, Father Menard retired to Oblate Madonna Residence in San Antonio. He was awarded an honorary degree of letters from Notre Dame Seminary in 2010.
A funeral Mass was celebrated March 10 at the Oblate Madonna Residence Chapel. He was buried at the Oblate Cemetery.
Father Menard is survived by four brothers – Father Gilbert Menard, Leonard Menard, Roland Menard and Arthur Menard – and eight sisters – Cecile McDonald, Rita Miner, Theresa Lavoie, Dominican Sister Elizabeth Menard, Gloria Menard, Catherine Frederick, Regina Stansbury and Jeanne Menard.
