The Patrick F. Taylor Foundation named 18 finalists in “18 in ’18,” a Tricentennial arts competition showcasing the creative talents of high school juniors and their connection to New Orleans’ culture.
Seven judges chose the finalists from 47 high school students who submitted original essays, graphic arts, poems and videos.
“As we honor the Tricentennial of New Orleans, it’s important that we capture the voices from our community’s young people,” said Phyllis Taylor, president and CEO of the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, which she started with her late husband Patrick in 1985 as a charitable extension of Taylor Energy Company.
The grand prize winner will receive $1,800, and their school will receive $18,000. The winner will be announced in October at the opening of the Taylor Education Center in New Orleans’ Warehouse District. Finalists also will be featured in a film produced by high school junior Kelly Yu, with assistance from artist and design consultant Xiao Xiao.
“We encourage everyone to visit the 18 in ’18 website where you’ll see an incredible diversity of talent and creativity from our community’s young artists,” Taylor said.
Eight finalists are from archdiocesan Catholic high schools: Ella Cheramie and Vivian Palmer, St. Mary’s Dominican; Jillian Frazier, St. Katharine Drexel Prep; Bradley Fugetta, Jesuit; Kathryn Mipro, Marisa Scarlata and Kennedy White, Cabrini; and Tarik Wilson, Holy Cross School.
Other finalists are Ashley Dwyer; Autumn France, New Orleans Charter Science and Math High; Ava Gisleson, Lusher Charter; Raymond Green; Tyron Newman, Warren Easton Charter High; Rosie Odem, Anaiyah Saulter; Ryan Simien Jr., Elijah Turk and Decia Williams.
