Father Michael J. Flynn, 57, a priest of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Fla., and associate professor of theology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, has been named executive director of the Secretariat for Divine Worship of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
He succeeds Msgr. Richard Hilgartner. Father Flynn’s appointment becomes effective June 30, but he will spend the next six months in a transitional role.
Father Flynn has served as director of sacred music and as a spiritual director at the seminary. He also has taught liturgy and the sacraments.
“He’s been a tremendous asset to the formation program,” said Father James Wehner, seminary rector. “I believe the fact that the USCCB looked to our faculty to find someone who can fulfill this national responsibility speaks to the quality and competency of the type of faculty we have here at the seminary.”
