Sister of Mercy Sister Mary Majella Winters (Ruth Winters), who served 73 years in religious life, died May 17 at Mercy Health Center Convent in Oklahoma City. She was 89.
A New Orleans native, Sister Mary Majella entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1939 in St. Louis and made vows in 1942. She received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education at Loyola University New Orleans and master of science degree at the University of Notre Dame.
She taught at Mercy Junior College and Mercy High School in St. Louis, and she served in New Orleans at St. Alphonsus, St. Michael’s, Holy Name of Jesus and Mercy Academy.
Sister Mary Majella moved to Oklahoma City for seven month after Katrina. She enjoyed her religious community, reading, sports, informative discussions and current events. She was noted as a prayerful, lighthearted person.
She is survived by a niece, Brenda Vandermeer, and two nephews, Paul and David, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated May 21 at Holy Name of Jesus Church. She was buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery No. 3.
