For those who don’t know better, it could be assumed that Brother Melchior Polowy was a Sacred Heart religious associated with wrestling at Brother Martin High School.
A large trophy, which carries his image, seems to have a permanent home in the school’s Ridgley Center.
For the 14th time, Brother Martin has captured the Louisiana High Schol Athletic Association’s Division I team title. And the Crusaders had the trophy ticketed for a return to the school long before the Feb. 16 championship tournament at the Pontchartrain Center was halfway through the final events.
Brother Martin led a cluster of five Catholic schools at the top of the leaderboard by scoring 315.5 points.
Martin was followed by Jesuit, 265; Catholic High of Baton Rouge, 246.5; St. Paul’s, 223; and Archbishop Rummel, 198 points. The closest public school was Comeax, which finished sixth with 164.5 points.
The school at which Brother Melchior did introduce the sport to Louisiana 68 years ago also has a trophy that carries his image.
For the 27th time, Holy Cross overwhelmed Division II with sheer numbers to claim the team trophy. And the Tigers did it with just one individual champion, Alex Nicosia, who won the 126-pound title by defeating Teurlings Catholic’s Tristan Lee.
But Holy Cross had eight wrestlers pick up points as runners-up, which helped give the school a total of 276, and a 44.5 winning margin over Teurlings.
Five Crusaders won individual gold medals and three were awarded silver medals for second place.
But the star wrestler of the night was St. Paul’s senior Connor Campo, who finished a perfect 46-0 season by winning his second Division I, 232-point title by pinning Archbishop Rummel’s Rick Lacava.
