Loyola University New Orleans’ School of Communication and Design (SCD) will host the 2022 SCD Summer Experience, a comprehensive boot camp June 27-July 1 that exposes high school students entering grades 9-12 to careers in filmmaking, motion design, interactive design and writing.
High school students from across the region are invited to register and learn from top-notch educators and industry experts about endless professional opportunities.
The hands-on program is designed to challenge and inspire high school students to explore a variety of methods and media, while engaging in a process that is collaborative, thought-provoking and imaginative.
The concentration areas offered are Motion Design, Interactive Design, Film and Writing. Students will choose an area of focus but will be exposed to all programs throughout the week. The concentration areas are limited to 15 students each.
So many possibilities
Dr. Sheryl Haydel, director of the School of Communication and Design, said she hopes the experience will be “a fun and meaningful way to expose high school students to all the career possibilities” in those fields.
“The Summer Experience provides a hands-on opportunity for young people to turn their curiosity into something creative that tells a story,” Haydel said.
The program has an ancillary benefit to Loyola, Haydel said, because it exposes high school students to a unique college atmosphere and will encourage them to view Loyola as “a destination place for studying mass communication and design.”
“Students, and sometimes their parents, don’t fully realize that there are lucrative professions in our area,” Haydel said. “Our school is a leader in training the next generation of journalists, filmmakers, designers and strategic communicators. The Summer Experience allows high school students to marry critical thinking and creativity to write articles, poems or make films and designs that positively impact the world.”
Students can choose from the following experiences:
If tuition is paid before April 1, the cost will be $375 ($450 after April 1). Loyola faculty and staff should contact [email protected] for details on discounted rates for their children.
A limited number of need-based scholarships are available, and more information on those scholarships is available at [email protected]
Classes will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily in new studio spaces complete with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. For more information, go to cmm.loyno.edu/scdexperience.
