It was another banner sports year for Catholic schools from the Archdiocese of New Orleans as 10 accounted for 16 state championships in 10 sports.
While Jesuit led the way with team championships in swimming, soccer and tennis, Rummel, St. Paul’s, Pope John Paul II and the Academy of the Sacred Heart each captured state titles in two sports.
The high school sports calendar started with Rummel winning its first Class 5A football title in December and Mount Carmel defeating Fontainebleau for the Division I volleyball championship.
Rummel also won the Division I boys’ bowling team title.
The fall season also produced two more championships for local Catholic schools. Dominican won the girls’ Class 5A cross country championship, and the Academy of the Sacred Heart finished first in the Class 2A cross country meet.
The title deluge continued during the swim season when Jesuit won the Division I boys’ crown and St. Charles Catholic’s boys swam to the Division III title.
The Academy of the Sacred Heart gained its second team title by winning the Division III girls’ soccer championship.
St. Paul’s scored its double championships in the sports of golf and powerlifting, and Pope John Paul II won both the Division IV boys’ and girls’ powerlifting title trophies.
One wouldn’t envision the state football champion also winning in the sport of bowling, but Rummel did just that in March.
The only sports in which the locals failed to win a team title were baseball, softball and track and field.
