The Congregation of St. Joseph commissioned 20 new lay associates
Jan. 11 at its People Program Center in New Orleans.
Associate members are those who recognize a common faith and “charism” or spirit with the Sisters of St. Joseph. In response to God’s love and their growing faith, they participate in a 12-month formation process in which the history and charism of the congregation is studied.
While in formation, the “inquirer” discerns the call to strengthen that charism in a community of support with the sisters and other lay associates.
During this process, they refine their discernment regarding the call to live the congregation’s mission of unity and all-inclusive love of God, creation and the dear neighbor without distinction. With vowed members, they offer their life experiences, their blessings and gifts in service of dear neighbors of all kinds within the local and global community.
Those newly commissioned are from the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.
There are approximately 694 lay associates in 29 states, Canada, Japan and Puerto Rico.
