HOLY ROSARY HIGH SCHOOL, 2437 Jena St., New Orleans, LA 70115 – Holy Rosary High School (HRHS) has moved into its new location on the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Freret Street. HRHS opened its doors in August 2005 to educate students in a Catholic coeducational environment that embraces individual learning styles, develops intellectual curiosity and emphasizes their students’ diverse and unique strengths.
HRHS is approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and offers a college preparatory, coeducational program in grades 8-12. As HRHS Bulldogs, students will experience hands-on learning, so they can “touch it and remember it”; cross-curricular learning, so they can connect to the world around them; alternative assessments, so they can discover their learning styles; and small classes, so they can receive individual attention. HRHS helps students experience academic success and believe in themselves.
One of the distinctive characteristics of HRHS is an emphasis on integrating subjects across the curriculum, writing across the curriculum, research and inquiry methodology, experiential learning and arts, which are integrated in the curriculum throughout the course of the school year. One goal is to connect content courses, fostering recall skills to create more productive learning. Links are made between math/science and English/social studies and the arts. Students will have the opportunity to perform at optimal levels by visualizing, touching and actively participating in learning.
Technology in the Holy Rosary classroom improves student achievement. The school prepares students with the technological expertise that is the essential foundation for lifelong learning. HRHS continues to utilize a one-to-one computer program using iPads.
HRHS also offers a low student-teacher ratio and several alternative forms of assessments. Students will be able to complete inquiry projects and receive extra help from teachers. A high school parent commented: “I could not imagine a better school for my daughter. It really is the way ‘every’ child should be taught.”
At HRHS, students will surpass the graduation requirements prescribed by the state of Louisiana. Whether students pursue a college preparatory curriculum that meets TOPS standards or follow a different path, HRHS works with them and their families to ensure that they are choosing their best future for his or her learning needs – whether that would be a four-year university, a community college, an apprentice program or a career after high school. HRHS has graduated 72 students who collectively have earned in excess of $300,000 in scholarships.
The Learning Center, staffed by a full-time, on-campus learning specialist and a technology specialist, offers students one-on-one accommodation implementation, academic counseling, tutoring and access to innovative programs that increase computer expertise. All of these elements emphasize study and organizational skills and methods useful throughout school and work lives.
An HRHS parent recently said, “The way that Holy Rosary presents information makes all the difference. My son finally gets it.”
The HRHS Bulldogs compete as members of the LHSAA in cross country, boys’ wrestling, bowling and track and field. Students also enjoy the opportunity to participate in the All-Sports Club, which concentrates on year-round fitness for all students who wish to participate regardless if they compete as athletes.
Many extracurricular clubs were created by students. In addition to traditional clubs such as Student Council, art club, science club and campus ministry, Holy Rosary boasts a spirit club, movie club, Earthsavers, robotics club and a walking club. One parent said, “I love the way Holy Rosary lets my daughter take an active role in how she wants her school to be.”
HRHS meets the students’ spiritual needs through religious studies classes and campus ministry, which offers retreats, monthly Mass and the sacrament of reconciliation. The school continues to serve the community through clothing drives, food drives, various collections for the needy and grade-level service hour programs.
