A collaboration among St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s Ecology and Stewardship Club, school alumnae and Ye Olde College Inn chef Baker Guevara (whose wife Amber is a 2012 graduate) created an herb garden of rosemary, dill, parsley, thyme, basil, oregano and chives to be used by SAGE Dining Services on campus and at College Inn.
Dominican alumna Shelley Mateu Cesulka (’92) led the effort by preparing and landscaping the garden with rocks, ground cover, soil, mulch, organic materials and plants. Alum Patrice Keller Kononcheck (’98) and husband Chris installed raised garden boxes made of untreated cedar.
Members, moderated by Joann Schwartz Haydel (’91), planted herbs and watered, weeded and maintained the garden.
“I was thrilled to see students dive right in and get their hands dirty when we planted our herbs,” Haydel said. “For many, this was their first time planting a garden.”
